Roman Pavluchenko opened the scoring for Russia midway through the first half, before Andrei Arshavin put the match beyond Sweden's reach with another early in to the second half.

That meant that Sweden, with Manchester City's Andreas Isaksson in goal, had to score at least twice to keep their hopes of staying in the tournament alive, but they failed to find a reply.

Meanwhile in Group D, already qualified Spain beat Greece 2-1. Greece scored their first goal of the tournament minutes before the interval, with Angelos Charisteas heading beyond Liverpool's Pepe Reina after Greece were awarded a free-kick.

A Spain side featuring Xabi Alonso of Liverpool and Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas equalised on the hour mark through a strike from Ruben de la Red. Daniel Guiza scored the winner for Spain with two minutes of normal time remaining.

Spain will now face Italy in the last eight while Russia will play Holland.
