Manchester youngsters can enjoy adventure activities thanks to the PFA/Premier League Community Fund.
Manchester City's registered charity City in the Community (CITC) has been awarded a grant of £195,455 to deliver a three year project designed to encourage more young people between the ages of eight and 19 to take part in constructive, healthy, physical activities.
The scheme which is also supported by Sport England and Manchester City Council is divided into two parts - free play activities for 8-13 year olds in Manchester parks and adventure activities such as rock climbing, mountain biking and canoeing for 13 - 19 year olds.
Alex Williams MBE who manages the award winning charity said: "We are very grateful to the PFA and the Premier League for their support in this exciting project that in partnership with Manchester City Council and Sport England will help young people take part in positive activities during the school holidays."
All of the activities are designed to attract young people sometimes put off by mainstream traditional sports and will help to sign post them onto other physical activities in the city.
new projects
CITC's Play and Adventure Co-ordinator, Eddie Afekafe said: "More and more young people are looking for ways to get excitement in their lives.
"Rather than have them do this in a negative way we hope to help them find this buzz through positive activities that can also help them stay fit and healthy."
The new Premier League/PFA Community Fund enables Premier League clubs' community departments to apply for grants to start innovative new projects, or develop and enhance the many they already deliver. The £12.9million three-year fund is administered and managed by the Football Foundation.
positive impact
Premier League Chief Executive Richard Scudamore said: "It is great to see the Premier League/PFA Community Fund is able to help support innovative, multi-sport projects like Manchester City's Play and Adventure.
"Although football is obviously at the core of most projects that the Premier League delivers, this is an excellent example of where a range of different activities can have an equally positive impact."
