The Nigeria international completed his move from Championship side Watford for an undisclosed fee on Wednesday.

Megson said Shittu could make his first appearance against AEK Athens in Greece on Friday but would have to fight to earn a place in Bolton's first Barclays Premier League match of the season against Stoke City a week on Saturday.

Megson told the club's official website: "There is no guarantee he will get into the team and he has work to do because we have already got two good centre-halves.

"Danny's a mountain of a man, he's aggressive, he's quick and his biggest strength is in the air. Anybody who has seen him play will know his defensive qualities already, plus he is dangerous from set-pieces as well."

Megson explained he signed Shittu to replace Abdoulaye Meite, who wants to leave the club.
