The Frenchman watched Robin van Persie and Emmanuel Adebayor score two apiece on Tuesday night as the Gunners went someway towards banishing memories of the 2-1 home defeat to Hull City last weekend.

"It was most important to respond quickly in a convincing way to the game against Hull and that's what we did," said Wenger.

"I was happy with the attitude and focus. Perhaps we were too tense at the start but we were focused and at this level that 's vital.

"It's difficult to measure our best performance this season but this was maybe our most complete performance.

"This is half the response I want. The other half comes on Saturday against Sunderland."

complete performance

Wenger added that he expects to win the group.

He then went on to praise the influential Cesc Fabregas who shone at the Emirates Stadium.

"I thought he was outstanding. He was good offensively and defensively. It was a complete performance," he said.

Wenger said in his pre-match programme notes that he would make 'changes' following the Hull match, but only Samir Nasri came in, replacing Emmanuel Eboue.

"I was tempted to make more than one change but I didn't want to give the feeling that I was punishing one player more than another," he added.

"I wanted to give the team the chance to respond quickly. The change was not to punish anyone, it was because we needed to respond quickly as a team."
