Tottenham Hotspur beat Liverpool 4-2 in a thrilling encounter, while Chelsea were beaten on penalties by Championship side Burnley. Blackburn Rovers, meanwhile, secured a fine 2-1 win at Sunderland.

spurs progress

Harry Redknapp's magic touch continued with victory over Liverpool at White Hart Lane to secure Tottenham Hotspur a place in the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup.

Roman Pavlyuchenko, who netted the late winner when Liverpool were beaten by Spurs in the Barclays Premier League, opened the scoring with a crisp finish before Fraizer Campbell added his first two for the club since his loan from Manchester United.

Damien Plessis and Sami Hyypia pulled goals back either side of Pavlyuchenko's second but Spurs held on to stay in the competition they won in February under Juande Ramos.

chelsea stunned

It looked to be business as usual when Didier Drogba put the Blues in front in the 27th minute against Burnley but Ade Akinbiyi stunned Stamford Bridge with a 69th minute equaliser.

The match went to penalties, with Wayne Bridge missing in sudden-death to hand Burnley a 5-4 shoot-out victory, after John Obi Mikel had also failed from the spot.

Blackburn through

Roque Santa Cruz needed just two minutes to announce his return in style as Blackburn booked their place in the Carling Cup quarter-finals at Sunderland.

The striker, returning from injury, headed Rovers in front with 65 minutes gone after replacing teenager Andy Howarth and then saw Phil Bardsley put through his own goal five minutes later.

Kenwyne Jones, a surprise inclusion after he was sent to see a specialist over his knee injury just 24 hours earlier, gave the home side hope with his first goal of the season seconds later but it was to no avail.
